Department of Animal Science belongs to the first-level discipline of animal husbandry, including two secondary disciplines of animal genetics, breeding and reproduction, and animal nutrition and feed. Animal Science is a first-level authorized discipline for doctorate in animal husbandry, which is also a Post-Doctoral Research Station.

The purpose of animal science is to explore the basic laws of life such as genetic variation, growth and development, reproduction, feed digestion, and nutritional metabolism. The mission of animal science is to provide the high quality and quantity of animal products for humans. The research field of modern animal science has expanded from the traditional animal husbandry to other fields, such as aquatic animals, medicinal animals, companion animals, and economic animals. The Department of Animal Science has a team of teachers with high academic level, strong team spirit, including 10 professors, 7 associate professors, 4 lecturers, and 1 postdoctoral teacher.

Animal husbandry discipline is a high-level discipline of the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" in Jilin Province. In October 2014, the major of animal science has been approved as two projects both for the reform of top-notch innovative agricultural and forestry talent training models and the reform of the combined application of agricultural and forestry talent training models by Ministry of Education.

Department of Animal Science is to cultivate animal science and technology talents with knowledge and skills in animal genetics and breeding, animal reproduction, animal nutrition and feed science, livestock environmental sanitation and pasture design, livestock pasture management and animal production, and special economic animal breeding.
